The Conundrum of Not Being Able to Stop

Not everyone is in this predicament. Some people overeat a little everyday and have a hard time managing portions. Other people just can't stop eating at all. I was one of the latter kinds of people. I'd start eating and wouldn't be able to stop until I was so stuffed I hurt really bad.  This is abusive behavior. There is no magic wand, no way to chain you up so you don't keep eating, no way to turn you into a "thin" "beautiful" "perfect" person over night!........

Anorexia, Binge-Eating, Overeating, Bulimia?

As I’m engaged in a Personal Healing Program here at my Portland Center I am again aware of how much our eating behaviors are learned methods of dealing with trauma. Trauma is best described as an event that occurs that is  overwhelming for the nervous system to process or integrate.  The bottled up fight/flight response gets stuck and the individual finds he or she can't resolve what has occurred.  If a child is young when a trauma like this occurs, she........

Lose Weight?  Weight Loss?  Diet? Ugh!!

Do any of these words give you anxiety?  If you answered yes, you’re not the only one.  They do me!! Who wants to be stuck in weight battle bondage for the rest of her life. You know, after my own recovery from food and weight slavery, I became so sick of hearing these words, that I'd cringe anytime I had to tell people I worked in this field! That's true!. . . psss. . . I've never told anyone this before, except my closest friends. It's time to let the........

Loving those Sticky Self-Sabotaging Patterns

If you find yourself getting stuck in the same old rut over and over again, here are 3 tips that will help you get past it. Discover how it’s trying to help you. Instead of trying to get rid of it (which, quite frankly, doesn’t work), start a “conversation.”  Pretend the Stuck Pattern is your best friend and ask it, “Hey, how are you trying to help me?”  Let yourself be surprised by what emerges. Find an alternative way of getting the same need........

Clearing Self-Destructive Patterns

Sorry to have disappeared for a few weeks. When I go through my own intense transformations I can lose touch with reality. Anyone have that experience? These past few weeks have been rather difficult for me, but transformative and healing. I’m ready to burst out again having birthed myself into more love for me than ever before. Been confronting some deep ugly beliefs that have been insidiously hiding. I’m sure I’m not alone. In fact I find that when........

Are you Weighted Down?

When I work with women who struggle with problems connected to food and their body, I see a similar problem occur over and over again. It is the problem of feeling burdened by misperceptions about their value, their ability to know and act from a place of utter belief in themselves. Always. What I see is a lot of doubt or fear that is based on a diminishing self-image. The phrase that best expresses this place is “not enough.” When we feel consistently........

From fear to joy in one hour!

I am greatly honored to assist women break through old stubborn patterns, to watch them change right before my eyes and ears. I’d like to take a moment to honor one such client who had a huge shift during our session last week because sharing what happened for her can give others hope and strength to continue their own journey. This woman, we’ll call her Beth, has been struggling with food her whole life. Although Beth has been working on her food issues for........

Japan, Body-Shame and Other Things

The earthquake in Japan has left me even more aware of how fragile life is and how, at a moment’s notice, we can be wiped out--as in gone forever. And always when this kind of thing happens I have to take time to reassess--to ask myself what IS most important. Is there anything I am doing that is irrelevant or unnecessary to me and my life? If I was to die tomorrow would I be satisfied and fulfilled? Or would I have regrets? When I was in Ireland last year,........

One Simple Strategy…

One Simple Strategy that will end that "Not GOOD ENOUGH" feeling that underlies problems with food, money and love. In my last blog-post/article I talked about the underlying similarity between problems with food, money and love that many women grapple with. And I talked about the underlying experience of "I'm not good enough." Let's look more deeply at this idea of "I'm not good enough." Many of us who struggle with our food, our bodies, money or love are........
