Jane: Hi, this is Jane Latimer, and this is an introduction to the HCG Diet with Karen McGeehan.  Hi Karen, are you here?

Karen:  I am here.

Jane:  Why don’t you introduce yourself, tell people who you are and where you work and what you do?

Karen:  Yes, I’m a certified nutritionist and lifestyle educator and a former classroom teacher of 21 years and I’ve worked in naturopathic clinics and with naturopaths for 8 years.  Now I’m in one location—I  was in two—and  I’m working at Northwest Wellness Center in Wilsonville and we’re a one-stop-shopping center for health care because we have a naturopath, chiropractors, massage therapists, acupuncturists, and I am the nutritionist there.

Jane: Okay, great, so now go ahead and tell us a little bit about this HCG Diet and what makes it so special.  I know people have been on trillions of fad diets and all sorts of things.

Karen:  Well, I want to begin with my initial reaction to it, in case other people have felt the same thing when they’ve read information about it.  It was presented to me by a couple of clients asking me about it a couple of years ago so I did a real cursory review of it and I told them to burn because it was the antithesis of what I thought was a healthy way of eating, which involved calorie restriction and low fat, which I think are both unhealthy.   But I had some other health care practitioner friends of mine that really encouraged me to look into it further because it was going to be a “hot tamale” in terms of people jumping on the HCG wagon; other clinics being set up just to do HCG Diet and they encouraged me to do it because of my thoroughness, because there were people getting health wise in trouble with the diet because they were doing it without any kind of guidance.  So I did all kinds of reading and then I read what I could about the physiological impact of HCG and consulted with other healthcare practitioners and then the data looked reasonable if you followed the precautions of watching the body and its ability to clear and cleanse the toxins you’re removing along with the fat.  And then I just started collecting my own data and mainly from other healthcare practitioners, who were encouraging me to do it and I was having them come in—and both men and women—and I was measuring them, I was monitoring them, and I was totally blown away, by, uh, the shift in their health numbers, because my experience has been, with low-calorie eating and low-fat eating that they may lose weight, but people lose lean-body tissue. 

And I don’t see an improvement in other numbers, other bio-markers of health; they don’t go in an upward direction.   This is the first diet I’ve seen where 100% of the time, if it’s managed correctly, not only do they lose mostly fat, but they get healthier in the process.  So that’s the background in leading up to starting to do it.

I personally did it—again, all these things I did before I started offering it as a clinician.  I personally did the diet myself and put my husband on the diet, so I learned how you had to play with it for individuals and then after that I felt confident that it was a safe thing to do and have been offering it since April and have put many people on it.  And it’s been really quite amazing, even some of my people I’ve been concerned about putting on the diet, their health has been so improved from having been on it.

Jane:  So, can you tell us exactly, I mean what is it, what makes it so remarkable?

What makes it remarkable is that the hormone HCG; what it is, is it’s the hormone that pregnant women produce and it helps metabolize fat in the body so that in the event that the woman didn’t have enough calories or enough nutrients for the baby to be nourished, there are fat stores that the mother has that that hormone collects the calories from those fat stores to make sure the baby gets nourished.  Now, I’m being very simple in my explanation of this, but I’ve found this is the best way people understand it.

So you take this hormone, it has that similar impact on the body, so you do eat a calorie restrictive diet of only 500 calories (that’s what shocked me) and you eat no fat.  Again, two things I’ve always advised people against.  But you’re not truly burning only the 500 calories.  You don’t eat the fat because this, then, forces the body to burn your own body fat stores.  So you’re actually burning more like 1500 calories or more, like somebody with a faster metabolism like men, men lose faster on this than women, so they might burn a couple thousand calories on the diet.

The amazing this is when you get everything corrected just right for you, you know, the dose of the HCG and that kind of thing, is you’re not hungry.  But the miracle that also accompanies that is you don’t crave.  And for some people, it’s the first time in their life that they have never NOT experienced cravings!  And I use my husband as an example, even though he lives with a nutritionist, poor guy, doesn’t mean he listened to what I said, because he has a lot of allergies and he would still eat those foods which ended up being trigger foods to being addictive for him—you know, like corn chips and that, as simply an example.  He noticed, himself, on the diet, he said, “Boy is this, having the cravings gone, when I feel like I want to eat something it’s the first time I’ve recognized my emotional state of being when I go after that food, because I know I’m not hungry, so then I stop myself and question, why do I want that food when I’m not hungry.  It’s giving me an opportunity to see how many times a day I desire food for emotional reasons.”  So it’s such, and I’ve capitalized on that in the program that I do, is it makes it so much clearer in separating out the physiological hunger from the emotional hunger.

Jane: Yeah, so actually we’ll go into that in more depth on the live call that we’re doing in a couple of weeks, which for people who are interested in that, you’ll be able to, you can sign up right on the website here to that live call.  It’s absolutely free and Karen and I are going to talk more in depth about the diet and how it works and the amazing results people are getting and you’ll be able to come on and ask questions about that as well.  So, you know, I don’t want to spend a lot of time here.  I just wanted to give people a quick sense of this so they can sign up for the live call, which will go 45 minutes to an hour and give people plenty of time to ask questions.  That’s right, Karen, right?

Karen: Yep, absolutely.

Jane: And, uh, is there anything, I’m just trying to think if there’s any other thing that we need to leave people with at this point.  I mean, I know I have so many women that I work with who really, really want to lose weight and who are so frustrated with their bodies.  They’ve been on low-calorie, oh my God, horrible, horrible low calorie, low calorie, low calorie—it’s so devastating for most women to have to do something like that.  But your thing and the experience has been that on this particular diet, with the HCG hormone, you don’t even know that you’re on a low-calorie diet, that’s correct, I mean, you’re not hungry?

Karen: Yes, I mean you’ll feel empty, but actually it gets to be nice to have your tummy to start deflating from eating trigger foods, so you’re not hungry if it’s managed right.  And you don’t crave and that’s probably the biggest miracle of the diet of all, is that your cravings stop.  The other benefit is the diet, itself, is so anti-inflammatory that a lot of conditions that are driven by inflammation come down as well.  Some people become body-pain free.  Now, I’m saying some people, I’m not saying all people.  But there are a lot of people that are experiencing an improvement in some of the symptoms of the diagnoses that they have, that that’s the second benefit of it.  It’s such an anti-inflammatory diet that that’s why I think I see the other health markers improve and how striking an acknowledgement it is that what you eat is medicine, because it changes your physiology.

Jane: Yes, now this is important and I want to leave people with this right now.  I don’t want people to wait.  Because, you know, people are going to hop on the internet and look up HCG Diet and see where it is and order the HCG and try to do it themselves.  So tell us right now why your approach is so important.  I’m just going to say my friend Jimmie, who went to you and worked with you—she was adamant (and I’ve included the testimonial on the website page)—I mean, she was adamant about the difference between working with you and going online and getting it.  Because, you know, quite frankly you can go online and get the program quite a bit cheaper, but she said that working with you made a huge difference to her because you were doing testing, you were being sure that her health, she found things about her that she needed to know about her metabolism and the way she processes food that she couldn’t have found out if she hadn’t been working with you.  So just say a little bit more about that and then we’ll end.

Karen: That was part of my research, was I looked at all the forums of people doing the HCG Diet on their own.  I probably spent about 40 hours and I saw a lot of people struggling and have a lot of health issues with the diet and I had to control myself from not wanting to email them back and giving them nutritional advice.  But a lot of people were doing it incorrectly and, in fact, a lot of those people are my clients now who have actually experience HCG Diet and, if it’s not done correctly and it’s not ended correctly, you’re going to gain the weight back faster than on any other diet you’ve ever done before.  And I’ve had two people where the boomerang effect of not having done the diet correctly and having concluded the diet correctly who gained the weight back faster than they’d ever experienced weight gain before in their life.  So that is important.  Secondly, you’re comfort on the diet—and I see a lot of people uncomfortable on the diet—is everything about knowing how your body is functioning, which is a piece I have people do.  I want to make sure that when people are on diet, that they’re able to process all the fat and all the toxins we store in our fat because, if you don’t, there can be some side effects from having done this diet.  So I’m very cautious in making sure that people’s bodies are prepped to handle the diet in a healthy and comfortable way and not gain the weight back.

Jane:  Okay, well it’s more than just gaining the weight back.  It’s also about the overall health, correct?

Karen:  Oh, absolutely!  Yes, that’s the biggest piece.  That’s the most significant piece.

    Jane, I am so disappointed in you for promoting the Hcg diet and I really feel it’s a conflict with what you teach. However, if you said (which I didn’t read anywhere and if I missed it, I’m sorry) that once you’ve found your way out of the negativity and major problems with using food, that then you recommend this diet, I could more easily understand. But recommending it right up front-what makes you any different now-just another person promoting another diet which is truly a set up for those of us that are still struggling! I don’t even care if it’s a miracle-I don’t want to use food anymore to cover up my emotions. That is what needs to be addressed 1st, then the diet in my opinion.

    Laura, thanks for sharing this with me! You’re absolutely right. The emotional issues have to be addressed, not necessarily first though, because many times emotional issues are masked by biochemical issues or the biochemical issues often times come first and look like emotional issues. It’s not a simple issue. \ And, btw, karen isn’t just a HCG diet person, she’s a highly respected clinician who hated hcg when she first found out about it, but was amazed at the results people were getting as well as the health benefits, using her approach. Many people can’t lost weight because of their biochemical and genetic make-up despite years of emotional work and they finally get a chance to have a body they deserve. I hope you can see how NOT SIMPLE the whole issue is. And I’m not promoting HCG, I’m promoting the way karen does it.

    Jane, I worked with your program and with Karen back in 2006. Karen had me on an allergy type food test; to see if I was allergic to any grains, etc. it was tough and the deprivation set me off into a binge. I went on the HCG diet last month; it’s terrible in so many ways. Healthy emotionally or not, this is a very restrictive diet and it works, but most diets work; you just gain the weight back anyway. It’s an entire lifestyle change that is the key, and this is what I’ve been working on; and what I thought your program was about – and also, working on emotional issues and behaviors. Karen didn’t really follow up with me or help me in the long back in 2006, and I don’t think with her HCG that she will help other followers of your program now in 2010. Sorry to see you promoting this. Eileen

    I just want to speak to an area that touches on Laura’s concerns. While I am not an emotional eater in the classic sense, I was able to see some eating “patterns” revealed while following Karen’s HCG diet protocol that were illuminating. For instance an awareness of the desire to do habitual eating, triggered by place, circumstance or time of day, that actually has nothing to do with hunger. Another was the awareness of the desire to eat because I was bored, again having nothing to do with hunger. And a critical health issue for me – the biological urge to correct a high dose of adrenalin brought on by stressors, through the act of eating, very important in addressing insulin resistence. None of these are physiological needs requiring food to correct, but over time the development of eating as a remedy creates patterns, neural pathways, that are difficult to correct without some measure of distance that allows one to become conscious of what’s actually going on. The HCG provides enough distance from genuine hunger, and enough time (26+ days) to allow the examination of the “urges to eat” and develop new patterns in their stead.

    Thank you, Jane, for suggesting I check out the HcG diet. It is exactly what I needed but didn’t know it. After a year of working with you I gave up dieting for good. And it was for the good! Much healing has gone on on and I no longer eat emotionally. But I never lost weight, and that was okay. When you told me about Karen and this new diet I crept in cautiously. After all, I had just finished writing a book about why I would never diet again! The fact is that I am ready to let go of this extra weight–not with negative judgments or self-hatred–just with the realization that my body seems determined to keep hold of an extra 100 pounds no matter what. But now there is Karen and the HcG diet. I have stuck to it since August 1, because it is actually possible to stick to! I’ve lost 35 pounds and am ready for 6 weeks of maintenance. Karen has been incredibly careful from the beginning to be sure that I was healthy enough to set out on this new venture, and she has been unfailingly supportive throughout. I know I wouldn’t have been able to reach this point–of actually dropping the weight that no longer has anything to do with ME–without the work I did with you, Jane, the careful construction of the HcG diet, and the care and diligence of Karen McGeehan.     I have done some research on what the ‘food’ part of this diet entails and am very interested in knowing if this diet will work for a vegan.
