Radical Self-Care: ME TIME

When I went to Ireland I brought a suitcase full of yarn.  I know, you’re thinking, “Yarn to Ireland!?” But I’m glad I did.  There actually weren’t that many yarn stores there and not many women knit!  Believe it or not.  Not like here in the US.  So what’s the point? Why am I sharing this tid-bit of information?  Because…..knitting is a one of my primo ME TIME activities.

ME TIME is The Answer to Stress, Overwhelm and Powerlessness and ultimately the answer to overeating and other compulsive/addictive types of behaviors.

Having worked with hundreds of women I’ve learned one important thing.  Most of us women cannot gain control of our lives, and our food WITHOUT taking the time to care for ourselves!  So, if you find yourself overeating, stressed or feeling hopeless or powerless about the way things are going, my suggestion is STOP and breathe, or move your body (dance, take a walk or go work-out), and then grab your calendar and schedule some ME TIME.  And I mean serious ME TIME.

What is ME TIME?

It’s time you plan to be with you, doing something that is decadent and just plain FUN for you to do for no reason other than the fun of it!  Imagine that!  Mark out an hour a day for something nurturing just for you (I put my music up loud and dance around my house.  Then I sit in my infrared sauna, the one I bought for exactly that purpose—to use as my daily de-stresser—and it works!).   If you can, X-OUT one day every few weeks for METIME, too.   Go to the beach or a hike, the museum or galleries, or take a trip somewhere you’ve never been before.   Maybe it’s a day you put aside to devote to your journal and meditation, or to do an art project.  Whatever it is it’s got to be something you love to do and are really excited about.  (I’m taking the whole month of June off.  I’m attending two growth seminars in San Diego and then driving up to see my son in Calistoga.  I’ll have my laptop so I’ll be working during that time, but the idea is that I’m changing my environment and doing something adventurous and different, something that gets me out of the daily grind and rut of living and working in my house.) I'd love it if you'd reply with your thoughts on this. And. . . maybe some ideas. What do you love to do? Let's share with each other.

Btw, if you're wondering what the heck I'm knitting (in the picture above). Well . . . what I knit and how I knit is another whole story that just "cries out" to be told. We'll save that for another post!

“Me Time” for me to de-stress is as simple as getting on my exercycle (this helps me work out the excess energy) — BUT! My exercycle has a plywood desk attached to the handlebars, so I put my PC on it. And as I pedal, I can watch a hulu.com TV show I missed, or do on-line solitaire or mah jong, or watch some YouTube videos. I’ve set aside a folder in my e-mail called “Exercycle” where I can catch up on videos, websites I want to visit and games to do while exercising.
